Booking.com vs Airbnb: which fits your stay?
For a stay of two to eight weeks, compare apartments on both platforms using the same dates and guest count. Start with the full checkout price and the exact space you get. Then check what you would lose if your dates changed and whether the kitchen, workspace, and laundry suit your daily routine.
Airbnb vs Booking.com: five differences that matter
| What to compare | Booking.com | Airbnb |
|---|---|---|
Exact accommodation | Open the property’s room and apartment options (Booking.com). Check that the selected unit includes the kitchen and facilities you saw in the photos. | Place types are entire place, private room, hotel room and shared room (Airbnb). Choose entire place for the whole space. A private room can share other spaces. |
Total price | Check the total for your dates and guests, including taxes, extras, and charges payable at the property. | Open checkout for the full price breakdown, including applicable fees and taxes (Airbnb). |
Cancellation | Check the selected rate’s refund amount and cancellation deadline (Booking.com). Compare the refundable and nonrefundable rates when both are offered. | Monthly reservations of 28+ nights use a long-term cancellation policy (Airbnb). Read the terms on your exact listing before you pay. |
Payment timing | Payment can be at the property, charged by the property in advance, or arranged through Booking.com (Booking.com). Record which applies to your rate. | Check the payment schedule at checkout, including what is due now and later. |
Reviews | Scores run from 1 to 10, with recent reviews weighted more heavily (Booking.com). Start with the newest written reviews. | Listings show star ratings and written reviews, and the overall rating is separate from category ratings (Airbnb). Check the categories that match your needs, then read the text. |
Three checks before choosing a stay
- 01
Compare the same dates, guests, and currency.
Open the booking summary for each option. Use the total including fees and taxes, and check any charges payable at the property. Compare both totals in the same currency. A nightly headline price leaves out too much to choose on.
- 02
Check the exact unit and rate.
On a property with several room types, open the room or apartment you selected. Check its beds, kitchen, and photos. For cancellation, look at the refund amount and deadline attached to that rate; two rates for the same room can have different terms.
- 03
Resolve the detail that could rule it out.
If you take calls every day, confirm the desk and weekday noise. If you cook, check the stove and cookware. If you need laundry, find out whether the washer is in the apartment or shared, and what it costs. Use these questions to ask an Airbnb host or the monthly rental checklist. For a new listing, follow the no-reviews checks.
Is a better work setup worth $7 a night?
Worked example with fictional prices and booking terms: two apartments for one guest staying 21 nights.
| What matters | Apartment A on Airbnb | Apartment B on Booking.com |
|---|---|---|
| Total, including fees and taxes | US$1,512 · $72/night | US$1,659 · $79/night |
| Cancellation terms for this rate | Nonrefundable | Full refund until 7 days before check-in |
| Workspace | Dining table and dining chair | Separate desk and adjustable office chair |
| Daily essentials | Kitchen and washer in the apartment | Kitchen and washer in the apartment |
For daily desk work, choose B. The extra US$147 buys a separate workspace for the whole stay: $7 a night. Its cancellation window also helps if you expect to confirm your plans before that deadline.
For a trip with little desk work and fixed dates, choose A. You save US$147 and still have a kitchen and washer. Check the Wi-Fi and recent noise reviews on either apartment before paying.
